More Than a Survivor: Brent’s Life of Giving Back

By Terrah Starling, ILS Facilitator

A Journey of Strength and Resilience

Brent is a great model of independence and fulfillment. He is a four-time cancer and stroke survivor. Diagnosed at just 18 years old, he has had quite the health journey. Daily, Brent works on his health and wellness by keeping track of his doctor appointments, following the advice and instruction of his physicians, and making sure he’s on time for every visit. Thanks to his hard work and diligence, Brent has been in remission for six years.

A Heart Full of Generosity

Generosity—freedom from meanness; a readiness or liberality in giving—couldn’t describe Brent more perfectly. He spends his spare time helping others, using his energy and passion to serve his community. If you’ve ever caught a flight out of San Jose or San Francisco, you might have seen Brent in action. For seven years, he’s volunteered at the San Francisco airport every Friday. On Mondays, you’ll find him at the San Jose airport—a place he’s served for over 12 years. Thursdays are dedicated to Stanford Hospital, where he supports the front desk and helps with the emergency room board. He is also a proud and active advocate for people with disabilities.

A Passion for Sports and Mentorship

Brent is a sports connoisseur, with baseball being his favorite. During the summer, he gives back by coaching the Junior Giants baseball team. When he’s not on the field coaching, he’s checking in players and welcoming them with a smile. His leadership and presence mean a lot to the kids he mentors.

A Friend to Animals

Brent’s heart for service extends beyond people—he also has a deep love for animals. For 16 years, he has volunteered with the ARF Animal Rescue Foundation, walking dogs and caring for cats. He’s also a full-time fur dad to his service Shih Tzu, Milly, who never leaves his side.

Love and Support Along the Way

Somehow, with all that he does, Brent has also made room for love. He adores his girlfriend of one year, Allison, who supports him in everything he does. Together, they make a strong and inspiring team.

Living His Compass Dream

Brent is putting his best foot forward to meet his goals with Compass—and he’s doing an excellent job. His life is a shining example of what’s possible with perseverance, purpose, and heart.
